Straw Marquetry

Straw Marquetry is one of the most time consuming and labor intensive applications seen in the field of decorative arts. This application utilizes straw in the same manner as stones are used in the exquisite applied art of petra dure and can be traced in France back to the reign of Louis XV. Marquetry became a true statement in luxury due to the countless hours necessary for the complexity of the projects. Two different techniques are utilized – Inlay or Veneer. Both capture and reflect light in a very unique manner. Silica found naturally in straw provides sheen and also makes the veneer impervious to water, giving the finish added durability.
